Mailchimp and Klaviyo are often compared because both are widely used and offer free plans. But they are aimed at different businesses. Klaviyo is built specifically for ecommerce: it integrates deeply with Shopify and WooCommerce and its automation is designed around purchase behavior. Mailchimp is more general purpose.
| Feature | Mailchimp | Klaviyo |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $13/mo | $20/mo |
| Free plan | ✓ 500 contacts | ✓ 250 contacts |
| Ecommerce focus | General | Ecommerce-first |

| Automation depth | Basic | Advanced (ecommerce) |
| Best for | General email marketing | Ecommerce stores |
Pricing
Mailchimp's free plan: 500 contacts, 1,000 emails/mo. Klaviyo's free plan: 250 contacts, 500 emails/mo. Klaviyo is more expensive on paid plans but includes more ecommerce-specific data. For non-ecommerce businesses, Klaviyo's pricing is hard to justify.
Ecommerce features
Klaviyo wins clearly here. Deep Shopify and WooCommerce integration, revenue attribution, predictive analytics, and pre-built flows for abandoned cart, browse abandonment, and post-purchase are all core to Klaviyo. Mailchimp has ecommerce integrations but they are less sophisticated.
Automation
Both have automation. Klaviyo's is more powerful and data-driven: it pulls product and purchase data directly into automation triggers and personalization. Mailchimp's automation is fine for general use but cannot match Klaviyo's ecommerce depth.
General use
If you do not run an online store, Klaviyo is the wrong tool. Its pricing and feature set are built around ecommerce metrics. Mailchimp works well for any type of business: service businesses, bloggers, nonprofits, and more.
Consider Mailchimp if...
- You do not run an ecommerce store
- You want a more affordable tool with a larger free tier
- You need broad integrations beyond ecommerce
- You want a simpler interface without ecommerce-specific complexity
Choose Klaviyo if...
- You run a Shopify or WooCommerce store
- You want automation driven by purchase behavior and product data
- You want to attribute revenue directly to email campaigns
- You want best-in-class ecommerce flows out of the box
The bottom line
Klaviyo is one of the best tools available for ecommerce and is worth the higher cost if that is your use case. Outside of ecommerce, Mailchimp is more practical, but it is not a strong recommendation on its own merits. If you do not run an ecommerce store and are starting fresh, there are better options than both.
