How to set up ActiveCampaign in 7 steps

STEP 1 Create your account 5-10 min

Go to activecampaign.com and start your 14-day free trial. You will be asked for your name, email, and business details. No credit card is required for the trial. Once in, complete the welcome checklist ActiveCampaign presents on first login -- it covers the main areas you will set up in this guide.

STEP 2 Authenticate your sending domain 15-30 min

Go to Settings > Advanced > Email Authentication. ActiveCampaign will give you a DKIM record to add to your domain's DNS. Log in to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, etc.) and add the TXT record provided. DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate, though they often go through in under an hour. Domain authentication is important: it tells email providers your mail is legitimate and improves deliverability significantly.

STEP 3 Set up your CRM 15-30 min

Go to Deals in the left nav and configure your pipeline. Rename the default stages to match your actual sales process. If you do not use a sales pipeline, you can skip this step -- but it is worth setting up custom contact fields even if you ignore the pipeline itself. Go to Contacts > Manage Fields and add any fields you need beyond the defaults (industry, lead source, product interest, etc.). You can also set up lead scoring rules here if you want to score contacts based on behavior.

STEP 4 Import your contacts 15-45 min

Go to Contacts > Import. Upload your CSV file and map each column to an ActiveCampaign field. You can assign contacts to a list and add tags during import. If you are migrating from another platform, export your contacts as a CSV first. Before importing, clean your list: remove hard bounces, unsubscribes, and contacts you have not emailed in over a year. A clean import protects your sender reputation.

STEP 5 Set up your signup form 15-30 min

Go to Site > Forms and create a new form. Choose the form type (inline, floating bar, popup, or floating box), design it using the drag-and-drop editor, then copy the embed code and add it to your website. Connect the form to a list and, optionally, trigger an automation when someone submits it. If you are using WordPress, the ActiveCampaign plugin makes this easier.

STEP 6 Build your first automation 45-90 min

Go to Automations and click Create an automation. Start with a welcome series: trigger it on list subscription, add a wait step of 1 day, then send a second email. From here you can build out more complex sequences -- adding conditions that branch based on whether someone opened the first email, clicked a link, or visited a page. ActiveCampaign's automation library has dozens of pre-built templates to start from if you prefer not to build from scratch.

STEP 7 Send your first campaign 30-45 min

Go to Campaigns > Create a campaign. Choose a template or start from scratch with the drag-and-drop editor. Set your subject line, preview text, sender name, and from address. Send a test to yourself first. When you are happy with it, select your list(s) and schedule or send immediately. After sending, the campaign report will show opens, clicks, bounces, and unsubscribes.

Tips before you start

  • Set up double opt-in on your signup forms from the start. It keeps your list clean and improves deliverability.
  • Use tags rather than multiple lists. Tags are more flexible and keep your contact database simpler.
  • The automation pre-built templates are genuinely useful -- browse them before building from scratch.

Next steps

Once your account is set up, focus on building your first automation before sending any broadcast campaigns. A working welcome sequence ensures every new subscriber gets a consistent first experience. After that, review your migration guide if you are moving contacts from another platform, and use the recommendations quiz to confirm ActiveCampaign is the right long-term fit.
